Medium format. Pixels and Sensors

There’s a saying: The bigger the better.. and it’s true for photography as well..

The bigger the light source, they say, the softer is the light.

The bigger the pixel size, the better it can ‘suck’ light and render noise (at high ISO)

And bigger also goes with more, as the more pixels the better.

When progress of technology pushes back the limits of physics, the combination of physics and optics is not alway optimal when you put too many tiny pixels in a cramped space, the sensor size.

It is said that Canon has the technology to put around 120 mega pixels in a full frame sensor (24mm x36mm), does it make any sense..?

While I am not chasing the numbers of pixels one can put on a sensor, I wanted to try bigger sensors, the ones that would be inside a medium format camera.

At comparable pixel count, I am curious to know how a 40MP DSLR sensor resolve details compares to a 40MP n a medium format camera..

I must admit, I don’t have a 40MP DSLR camera and would love to hear from those who shoot with near pixel count cameras (D800 ..?)

The H4D40 is a ‘crop’ sensor in the medium format world and a full frame medium format would have a sensor a bit bigger ..
